A truly toxin free home is tough to achieve in this day and age. Our clothing and furniture and food is all arriving in our homes laden with toxic chemicals. But with a little bit of effort, you can get the bulk of it out of your environment to help you and your family breathe just a bit easier. No DIY required!
And really, I love a good DIY project, but I don’t always have the time or the ingredients on hand so I have a staple of regular products I keep in my kitchen, bathroom and laundry room to make sure I always have a product that’s healthy to use for cleaning, laundry or body and skin care.
But let’s back up for a moment. Why is a toxin free home important?
Because it only takes 26 seconds after exposure for a single toxic chemical in a single product to be found in measurable amounts in our bodies. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health studied 2,983 ingredients in products in our homes and found:
- 884 toxic ingredients
- 314 caused biological mutations
- 218 caused reproductive problems
- 778 were toxic to the human body
- 146 cause cancer tumors
I don’t know about you, but that makes me angry! And I’m willing to do what it takes to get these poisons out of my house and out of my body and I want to help you do the same. It sounds overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be.
The first step is to get the free Think Dirty app on your phone. It has a barcode scanner for you to scan items in your home or while you’re out shopping. It will give each product a score from 0 (Very Clean) to 10 (Very Dirty) and then list each ingredient and it’s known or potential risks to your health. Start by scanning the products already in your home – even the ones that you believe to be “green”. Or just google the first few ingredients on the label and see what you find out about the potential dangers.
I was shocked to find out that products I was using that I believed to be “green” like Mrs. Meyers and Method still had toxic ingredients in them like Fragrance (literally the worst of all offenders) and Sodium Laurel Sulfate (a sudsing agent that’s very irritating to our skin).
Did you know that 1 in 3 women (and 1 in 2 men, by the way…) will be diagnosed in their lifetime with a serious illness?
That means between your mom, your best friend and you, one of you will face a significant health issue. And I don’t want to think about those numbers. I want to pretend that it’s not going to happen to me, to us. But we’re going to have to take action if we want to beat the odds. We’ve got to get the toxic chemicals out of our homes.
Here are a few of the not so fun facts about the products we’re using everyday:
- The last time legislation was passed regarding the personal care industry and their ingredients was in 1938. Yup. 80 years ago.
- 30 chemicals are banned in personal care products in the United States vs. 1,382 that are banned in the EU.
- 12,500 ingredients fall under the umbrella of the word FRAGRANCE on a label.
- Fragrance is now recognized as a common trigger for asthma attacks, migraine headaches, allergy reactions and sinus problems and accounts for 30-45% of allergic contact dermatitis.
- A 2017 study reveals long-term impact on cleaning products on women’s lungs is as damaging as smoking 20 cigarettes per day (I mean, really?!?!?!)
- 35% of children’s products labeled as “natural” contain one or more synthetic preservatives linked to health concerns.
- Top selling dryer sheets, fabric softeners, laundry detergents, and spray and plug-in fresheners were studied for safety. Results showed that nearly 100 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were emitted from the products, yet none were listed on the labels.
We have to choose to do better for ourselves and our families. These companies and the government are not looking out for our safety.
Are you tired of believing what the industry tells you is safe?
Are you tired of wiping down your counters with products whose labels warn you are poisonous?
Are you tired of smelling like chemicals after washing your hands (or body or hair?)
Are you tired of smelling the laundry detergent your clothes?
And getting a headache when you walk down the cleaning aisle at Target??
We don’t have to live this way. There is a better solution, and it doesn’t require you to spend all of your free time creating DIY projects (unless you enjoy that, and then by all means…create away!)
And if you need just a little more convincing, watch this 90-second video about what happens when a family gets the toxic chemicals out of their food for just two weeks.
I know this can feel a little hopeless and overwhelming sometimes, but we really do have the power to choose better products for ourselves and our families. This is why I choose to purchase my products through Young Living. So much more than just essential oils, they offer non-toxic cleaning and laundry supplies, beauty products from soap and shampoo and conditioner to a full line of green and clean makeup, baby products like wipes and diaper rash cream and and lotions, supplements, sunscreen, bug repellant, cough drops, and even an all-natural energy drink! Yeah, they’ve got a TON of products.
And I know I can trust these products because of their Seed to Seal promise. The company quite literally oversees or controls every single step of the process from the soil and water where the plants are grown to the harvest, distilling, production and shipping. They’re not buying plant material in bulk from an unknown origin so I feel comfortable knowing that I’m getting incredibly safe products to use in my home.
Switching to Young Living has literally saved me hours of time in the store every month reading labels or going to multiple stores to find greener products, not to mention that I don’t have to make my own products (and they smell better than cleaning with vinegar too!)
I just add items to my order each month and a few days later, the box arrives on my doorstep with everything I need to keep my home green and clean. And it’s not an additional expense in our budget each month either – I’ve just traded the dollars I was spending at Target or the grocery store to purchasing the same products from Young Living. Done and done.
And as if that wasn’t enough, they offer an awesome rewards program that gives you 10%, 20% or 25% of your dollars back to be used in store credit (depending on how long you’ve been ordering with them). What?!?! Yeah.
Target only gives you 5% back – not even enough to cover the tax in most states. I earn enough to cash in points every few months for even more products I need, oils I want or even the amazing makeup (tangerine lip gloss anyone?! Yes, please).
So, I hope I’ve convinced you….you’ve got to start getting the toxic chemicals out of your home and your body. You may not be able to do it overnight – I started a few years ago by switching out one product at a time as I ran out of things and seriously haven’t found a product yet that I’m disappointed in from Young Living. Yep. I guess that makes me a super-fan. Which means I can’t help but share it with all of you. Hit me up if you want to try it out for yourself. You won’t be sorry. I promise.
Or just get started right now with a Thieves Starter Kit. It includes everything you need to swap to all-natural products including a household cleaner (counters, floors, windows, everything!), hand soap, hand purifier, Thieves spray (hit those germ-y places in your home and office with this stuff), toothpaste, mouthwash and two bottles of essential oils (Thieves and Stress Away).
